YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURHOOD ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER
Small scale Dorset based Architecture and interior design.
Hey, we’re Dorset Maker Studio, our mission is to deliver thought full home architecture that not only fosters creative family living spaces but also inspire a deeper appreciation for our surroundings.
About our architecture
We focus on small-scale residential architecture, from extensions to new dwellings, taking projects through to planning. Based in Poole, Dorset, we work locally to design homes that support everyday family life and reflect how people really live.
Our approach is personal and considered. We take the time to understand how each space is used, designing in a way that feels natural, practical, and easy to live in. Whether itโs opening up an existing home, adding space for a growing family, or shaping a new dwelling, the aim is always the same, to create something that fits both the people and the place.
By working at a smaller, more focused scale, weโre able to stay closely involved throughout the process, keeping design at the centre of each project. The result is thoughtful, well-balanced spaces that feel comfortable, functional, and built to last within their surroundings.

About our interiors
Much like our approach to architecture, we take the time to design interior spaces that feel efficient, comfortable, and easy to live in. Every decision is considered, from layout and flow through to the smaller details that shape how a space is used day to day.
We can work from a completely blank canvas or help refine whatโs already there, finding simple, well thought-out solutions that make the most of the space without unnecessary costs. Whether itโs reworking a single room or tying together a larger interior, the aim is always to create something that feels balanced, practical, and personal and most important homely.
By keeping things considered and flexible, weโre able to design interiors that not only look right, but work naturally for the people using them.

Lifestyle guides (our favourite)
It’s tricky, you have bought a house or you have been there a long a time and you don’t know what to do with it. You feel approaching an Architect is too expensive and you’re not to sure what you want. That’s where we can step in with a lifestyle guide. Think of it as a timeline for your house with suggestions from short term changes to long term goals.

Architectural sketches
Renders are all the rage these days but sometimes a well thought out sketch can make all the difference from planning application artwork to conceptual presentations. We love to pick up our pens and draw because it brings a human quality to a project rather than just the polished 3d renders of today. I’m still yet to see a new build housing estate render that looks inviting and homely.

What If Architecture
What If architecture is something we love to do working around the built environment sketching proposals for urban areas or niche projects. From redefining outdoor community areas to sustainable developments we just enjoy designing. Sometimes architecture just needs to be imagined before it’ s real or has a purpose. If you have a site you want to get creative with, we certianly want in.
It all starts with a hello
Read below for our process and where we start with you
It starts with a friendly meeting to find out what you want for your piece of architecture or uplifting family interior. We may come for a site visit or start with a teams call to talk in-depth about your budget, design aspirations and most importantly you.
The Process
The Brief and you (stage 1)
Every great project starts with a brief which defines the projects aspirations and heading. Here is very important to make sure everyone is on the same page from specific requirements, to niche inclusions in the design. These can be for certain pieces of furniture, a cool idea for a secret gaming area or just set sizes for your dream kitchen.
Sketch Design Phase (Stage 2)
At this stage we will firm up the design with sketches and a few architectural plans. We will also include items such as an aspirations documents which is sort of an atmosphere blueprint for the style and feel of the project. From this point after we have presented to you we can finish any changes
Planning and refinement (stage 3)
Once the floor plan is firmed up we can start work on the heavy lifting which is the documents for your planning application if it’s needed. Some extensions can be done under permitted development. To be sure we always recommend a planning application as it’s a record of your houses development and a little nod to your neighbourhood your building something.
you may have Questions?
What is an Architectural designer?
An architectural designer is similar to an Architect but is not registered on the ARB board. Some architectural designers like myself chose not to enter the part 3 qualification route, instead perusing their own course as an independent designer. I still like to uphold the same standards and principles as an architects but do not belong to any chartered members or bodies.
How much does Architecture services cost?
Prices can vary from project to project but as we are not an architects practice we have slightly lower over heads. A rough estimate would be for ยฃ1000 to ยฃ2000 depending on the needs of your project. A good way to look at your project’s budget is generally 3% to 7% which is what a designer would charge. Our priorities are charging for a project where we plenty of time to design it with care and quality. We can understand lower costs but it becomes a rush to get it out the door if the fee isn’t right. Design sometimes isn’t a linear path.
How long does the process take?
Depending on the project and the needs it can take anywhere to a few weeks for interiors or general architectural packages. The real time delay is for planning with it roughly taking 14 weeks in the BCP area.
Why do we Only cover up to planning?
Most practices will handle everything but we specialise in design and development of a project. There are people, who’s jobs as architectural technologists and technicians is to provide high level construction drawing and information. We feel it’s more appropriate to ensure quality at all stages from all parties rather than stretch ourselves. We also love to promote collaboration
do we do sustainable stuff?
We won’t green wash your project or preach about rolling grass lands but we do believe good architecture design is inherently sustainable. We bare that in mind from natural resources, circular economy and solar gain, all the fancy buzz words, but it does make a difference.
do we work with developers?
We like to work with good developers. I’ve seen countless developments where my bedroom is bigger than someones garden and it’s something we can’t ethically do. Over development, or attempting to circumvent planning with loop holes is something we don’t want to be apart of. We believe as designers of the urban environment we hold a responsibility to providing sensitive designs and principles.
